Dear esteemed colleagues,

Given the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic declared by the WHO, we adopted the difficult but necessary decision to cancel the XVI International Symposium on Schistosomiasis which would be held from August 24 to 26, 2020, in Ouro Preto/Minas Gerais. Based on the latest guidance from the Brazilian public health officials and the travel restrictions imposed by different institutions and countries, it became clear to us that canceling was the right decision at this time

We apologize in advance for any problems caused by the cancellation and we are available to clarify any doubts. Right now, the health and safety of our members, speakers, guests, staff, and partners are our top priority.

We are following the scenario and discussing options, so that our event can be, as it has always been, a great space for schistosomiasis discussions and knowledge exchange. We want the symposium to be held in a moment of tranquility.

In the second half of 2020, we hope to be able to forecast the situation of the pandemic and its consequences in the world, so we will announce the new date for the symposium, which will be held in 2021 at the same place, the Ouro Preto Arts and Convention Center. We would like to maintain the event's schedule, and count on everyone's participation.

Sincerely,

Organizing Committee

XVI International Symposium on Schistosomiasis Ouro Preto – Minas Gerais, Brazil
E-mail: schistosymposium@fiocruz.br

The 16th edition of the International Symposium on Schistosomiasis

Will be held from the 24th to the 26th August 2020 at the Arts and Conventions Center of the Federal University of Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Organized by FIOCRUZ, the symposium will provide a forum for the various stakeholders, from research scientists to health managers to policy makers, with the goal of accelerating the elimination of schistosomiasis as a public health problem within the Health Unic System (SUS, in Brazil) and to assist the exercise of full citizenship by the population of the areas affected by the disease.

The topics covered by the symposium are broad and include basic, applied, translational and operational initiatives relating to disease control and elimination, (e.g., the development of vaccines, drugs, drug formulations and diagnostic tests), intermediate host control strategies, and the importance of using information, education, and communication (IEC) materials in communicating best water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) practices for the populations who suffer from or are at risk to schistosomiasis, as well as biological, epidemiological, clinical and public health aspects of the parasite and/or the disease.

The symposium will maintain the high standards and success of previous editions, which, historically, have been well-attended by Brazilian and overseas scientists, health care professionals, public health managers, coordinators of the Schistosomiasis Control Program (PCE-SUS) and the various secretariats from the Brazilian Ministry of Health. Most importantly, the symposium will continue to provide fertile ground for the many undergraduate and graduate students, and post-doctoral scientists who attend, thereby ensuring its critical role in both disseminating the latest information and facilitating new collaborative opportunities relating to schistosomiasis.

The symposium’s program comprises five conferences, ten round tables, twelve oral presentation sessions and one poster session. Free short courses will also be offered.
